Social Media is ALL About Value-Rich Content
Make it Unique, Fresh, Relevant... or Nobody Comes
Could there be any expression more hackneyed about the Internet than "content is king"...?
Still, it's more true today than it ever was; web content today makes last century's Web 1.0 content look like a peasant by comparison!
Years ago, Internet publishers realized that the way to get noted by the Google-bots was to have enough content on each page to merit attention. It wasn't a very sophisticated formula at first: minimum 250 words, including a bunch of keywords related to the search terms.
Then Google got pickier - forcing content to get better for consumers as the uber-search engine began to evaluate the value that a web page brought searchers.
Today, online content has taken on a much broader meaning than just text; when's the last time you saw a popular website that didn't have other assets besides words?
Then: Text only
Now: Videos, photos, podcasts, links, widgets, apps, mash-ups...
Digital assets and words rule the Internet kingdom together!
Everyone from the average teenager to the senior citizen can now be a content publisher, aggregator, and/or distributor - or at the very list, a consumer of multimedia content. To feed this seemingly boundless appetite for online content, your business needs to amp up its offerings...
And the best, easiest, most cost-effective way to do that is through social media.
Because the accepted best practice in online video is to produce one's own (and stay away from the slick studio production values of yesteryear), the cost of producing videos has come down dramatically. Ditto the ease and cost effectiveness of recording one's own podcasts, taking digital photos, etc.
Building a good media library for your company is not the big investment or hassle it once was - not that many years ago - and it is your key to deriving all the business benefits of social media optimization.
It's important to remember, too, that even if your prospects and customers are not purchasing as much as they would in good economic times, remember that on the Internet, these folks are still reading, researching, and forming opinions about your brand.
Great Social Media = Value-Rich Content that is...
- Original
- Relevant
- Frequent
- Sincere
- Open-source (anyone can use it)
